Awards
The Sarah Bates School Of Swimming is an A.S.A swim school following the NEW National Plan for teaching swimming.
Starting the new year I have introduced a whole new award scheme to enable your child to achieve more awards in a progressive order. This program takes swimmers through a journey of aquatics, which has been specially designed for swimmers of all ages and abilities.
You will be continually updated on your child's progress and be given a copy of the new awards that your child needs to achieve to go on to the next award. All distance awards will still be awarded throughout the award scheme.
If you wish your child not to receive any certificates then please let myself know on the above telephone number, or speak to my receptionist.
Baby Seals - Parent and Baby
This award is designed to introduce parents/carers and their young ones to the environment and delights of the water. I believe that introducing your little ones to water from an early age helps them avoid the traumatic experience that older children sometimes suffer around water. More importantly I believe that babies who learn key lifesaving skills from an early age, many of whom can swim by as young as 2 years old in my swim school, have a much greater regard for water and are safer around it.
The New National Plan Awards
The New plan comprises of 10 stages, 7 core stages, which develop the FUNdamental movement skills, and 3 stages per discipline to develop FUNdamental sport specific skills. This is done in progressive phases from adult and child to pre competitive swimming. The emphasis within the N.P.T.S is on the quality of swimming strokes and not simply on the distance that can be swum. Throughout repetition, revision and consolidation, pupils are encouraged to develop a multi skilled approach to swimming.

Rainbow Awards (Distance Swimming)
These awards are designed to demonstrate the pupils ability to swim from A-B without a pause (no aids to be used for these awards) covering distances from 5 metres to 5,000 metres. This is the only range of awards within the scheme that is designed to motivate the child to swim towards longer distances.
Please Note - for distances of 25 metres and above the stroke should be easily recognisable as one of the four competitive strokes, even though they may not meet the standard demanded by the A.S.A law.
Personal Survival 1 & 2
These awards are designed to educate your child with regard to survival in cold water, therefore most skills are taught using every day clothing to make it realistic as possible.
The new Water Rescue award
is designed to teach your child to rescue a person who is in danger in the water, teaching them never to enter the water but to stage a rescue from side using ropes, items of clothing etc.. Also teaching your child to - learn the Wter Safety Code, from R.L.S.S (educating your child about the dangers of open water and how to be safe).
